Las viviendas unifamiliares pueden ser aisladas (no tienen contacto con otras), pareadas (dos viviendas unifamiliares que están en contacto externo, aunque son independientes por dentro) o adosadas (una vivienda unifamiliar que tiene otras dos viviendas unifamiliares a cada lado).

Es importante destacar que, por lo general, las viviendas unifamiliares provocan un impacto ambiental inferior que los edificios, las torres y los rascacielos. Estas viviendas de una única familia requieren de una infraestructura menor y generan poco tráfico de vehículos.
